from page to screen, we made history.
Our team launched a screenwriting program in the Washington State Penitentiary as part of our Inside/Out Media Lab program. Instructor Don Roff used the Save the Cat! screenwriting curriculum to teach participants how to beat out a story and format a screenplay.
1.
Our students wrote a 15-page screenplay. Scenes were distributed among the students to write individually, and then compiled and formatted into a cohesive script.
2.
Production was approved by the administration. Students chose scenes to storyboard and ultimately direct, equipment lists were submitted, and our team crafted a production schedule.
3.
We made a movie. Over 4 days of shooting, students put their knowledge to the test and gained practical skills in directing, running audio, operating cinema cameras, and assisting with production tasks.
4.
“IT’S LIKE A FORMAL EDUCATION ALL OVER AGAIN.”
